Surfeed AS

Surfeed AS is a start-up tech company that develops innovative solutions for the aquaculture industry. Based in Øksnes in Vesterålen, we are situated close to the aquaculture industry. This gives us a unique starting point for developing technology that streamlines and improves the industry, in close collaboration with customers.

Our main focus is to develop solutions that contribute to sustainable growth and production of healthy and high-quality seafood.

Entrepreneur

Ronny Lassesen

The idea for this innovation came from Ronny Lassesen, who is one of two equal owners of a smolt company (Elvenesstrand Smolt AS) in Øksnes in Vesterålen.

Ronny and co-owner Trond Lassesen have, like others in the industry, struggled with challenges such as uneven growth rates (the strongest and most aggressive fish get the most food), increased mortality from injuries to the fish (due to the fight for food), significant waste of feed because it quickly falls to the bottom with today's automatic feeders, and thus goes to waste.

Like other players in the industry, they have tried to counteract the problem by manual hand-feeding. They have learned through observation that by placing the feed finely on the surface of the water, it does not fall to the bottom as quickly as before, and by that achieve a much more evenly distribution of the feed inside the tank. This contributes to a much more even and stable supply of food for far more fish. This does something to the entire situation in the tank when the fighting and aggression diminishes.

After working with various crude prototypes for automating the hand feeding process, Ronny chose to gather a multidisciplinary team to develop a scalable and commercial solution.
